At AMA Richmond, we make it a point to reach out to the college and university communities in our region.  We strive to foster relationships with the student AMA chapters, as well as connect with faculty and administration at all levels. These relationships benefit not only the students but also marketing professionals.

Being involved with AMA is a great way to hone your skills and build your network now, before you need it, so when graduation and a future career enter the equation, you are able to tap into the numerous contacts you've made over your collegiate career.  AMA Richmond is here to help, and we invite you to reap the many benefits of membership by joining and becoming involved with this outstanding organization.

Ultimately, the purpose of the collegiate relations program is to assist students in becoming productive, fulfilled members of the professional marketing community. Newly graduated students may also join the AMA as Bridge Members, an intermediate step between collegiate enrollment and full membership in the AMA Richmond Chapter.

AMA Richmond Collegiate Programs

Our chapter is committed to supporting and strengthening the region's colleges and universities by developing programs and lending our chapter's resources to students, faculty and staff. The following are just a few of the many ways we work with local schools:

Robert R. Barber Endowment Fund Scholarships

In 2001, the Robert R. Barber Endowment Fund for Scholarship and Training was established and named for Bob Barber, CEO and co-owner of Barber Martin Advertising, who was the AMA-Richmond President from 1998-99. Since 2001, the fund has grown from $17,000 at its creation to just over $100,000 today, thanks to both corporate and individual contributions, as well as contributions of AMA Richmond chapter funds raised through events. AMA Richmond will be awarding three scholarships in 2011: a first place award of $5,000, a second place award of $2,000 and a third place award of $500, on behalf of the Robert R. Barber Endowment Fund for Scholarship and Training.  Future scholarship amounts will be determined annually.

Marketing Q&A

Every fall, AMA Richmond participates in panel discussions with the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University AMA chapters. During these discussions, student members ask a range of questions regarding the marketing profession, including what to expect in the real world, how to prepare for their career and how to differentiate themselves in the job market. Our panel of leading marketing professionals provides real answers based on years of experience and industry insight.

In 2009, we kicked off the first ever career fair at Virginia Commonwealth University. This was a members-only event, where students had the opportunity to have their resumes critiqued by real-world marketing recruiters and then participate in a mock-interview with a marketing professional. In 2010, a similar event is being planned for Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond.

Guest Lecturers

Our professional chapter has hundreds of members in every facet of marketing, advertising and PR. We regularly supply local classrooms with some of the best and brightest minds in the marketing profession.

Networking Opportunities & Mentorships

Every month, our chapter reaches out to students and professors with invitations to hear world-class speakers at AMA Richmond luncheons.  These events are great opportunities to meet chapter members (and future employers!).

Our professional members are available for mentorship and can provide a real-world perspective on the fields of marketing, advertising, public relations, communications and more.

To Join

If your college has an established AMA Collegiate Chapter, find out the name of the Faculty Advisor for that chapter, usually a marketing or business professor, and ask for a membership application. Or download one here.

Get Involved!

Collegiate Chapters are always looking for students to take on an active role on their committees as well. If you are interested in becoming part of the decision making process for the Chapter, let the Faculty Advisor know when you go to sign-up or ask for a contact name of one of the Chapter's Vice Presidents. Getting involved at this level requires a small investment of your time but the rewards of increased participation are well worth it.
